Vieux Boucau guide
Vieux Boucau les Bains became very popular when the artificial lake and tourist complex “Port d’Albret” was completed back in the 1970’s. During the summer months some 10 to 15,000 inhabitants spend the days enjoying the man made facilities and basking on the very natural and beautiful local beaches.
Vieux Boucaux formally known as Port dAlret does have some history. It is thought that it was one of the first ports on the Landes coast at the mouth of the Adour river.
Vieux Boucaux is one of the smallest of coastal towns in Landres but there is still a lot going on here. The town holds markets on a regular basis as well as live music in the center of town. There is a good selection of restaurants, cafes and bars as well as a large selection of “tasteful” tourist shops selling beach towels and other beach related paraphernalia.
Camping is very popular in Vieux Boucau and its hosts several large camping grounds and camping car areas. The camping Municipal is right next to the beach and houses a lively camping type at the south end with several surf camps from Germany and Holland keeping up a residence there every summer. The next campsite with access directly to the beach is the Camping village resort and spa le Vieux Port. This is quieter and has more tree coverage to suit some campers.
The surf a Vieux is pretty consistent and has generally a friendly line up but be prepared to share it with a lot of surf camp lessons. The beaches are pretty well kept and gets regular clean up sessions orgnised by the local Marie and surf club.
Vieux is an excellent place to learn to surf, if you are not staying with one of the surf camps there are several surf schools situated at the entrances to the beach.
Eating out is pretty good for such a small town and probably the current favorite is La Pizzaiollette it certainly is hard to beat if your enjoying a good pizza. Closer to the beach you will find the very popular Restaurant La Plage Vieux Boucau with superb cuisine, great service and an even better wine selection. For snacks, light meals and in the evening after 22:00 heavy drinking check out the Mojito Bar on avenue de la Plage.
