Mimizan guide

A little history to start with.

Back in the days of 1910 Mimizan was the hunting ground for the 2nd duke of Westminster. Born in 1879 the richest man in England often stayed at the Chateaux Wolsack and spent his time gallivanting around the commune of Mimizan. Other famous types have frequented this part of the Landes are including Coco Chanel who spent 10 years of holiday time relaxing at the Wolsack as well as Salvador Dali and Charlie Chaplin.

Moving on.

Mimizan has 5 main beach areas Plage du Ponton, at the edge of Mimizan lake Aurelihan. Plage de Lespecier known as the wild beach of Landres, Plage Sud closest to the residential area of Mimizan, Plage du Courant, slap bang in the heart of the resort and last but not least Pagne Remember situated 10 minutes north on foot of Minizan beach.

Mimzan beaches as well as the rest Aquitaine area are wonderful natural areas and are protected and looked after in order to keep the natural environment in order. The dune cord that runs along this stretch of coast in theory keeps the sea from encroaching on the land, to lose this bank of sand could be disastrous.

The dune is constantly maintained and plants and vegetation are nurtured in order for them to grow and bind the sand together. Erosion of the banks are caused by the sea, winds and unfortunately humans that don’t pay attention to the warnings to keep to the designated paths.

This certainly is a fragile environment and as visitors to this part of the world should take it upon ourselves to respect it nature.

Away from the beaches you can Pedalo, Canoe and Kayak on the lakes and rivers. There is also a wonderful swimming pool with private classes available as well as an aqua gym with music and special time periods for people with disabilities and senior citizens.

Mimizan has its own Cinema, Theatre le Parnasse, a great place to catch up on the latest movies as well as holding dances and plays on a regular basis.

For food and drinks there are numerous establishments with a wide range of styles and tastes. Check out the Restaurant le Barracuda offering Paella, seafood and steaks or the Restaurant A Noste serving Aisian style cooking as well as traditional French dishes.
