Hossegor claims the name the “European surf capital” and certainly since the early 60’s Hossegor has become more and more popular as the place to surf in France. With a vibrant and enthusiastic surf culture Hossegor is a wonderful place to spend some time when visiting this region of France. For surfing the beach breaks in Hossegor and the surrounding area are defiantly world class and many professional competitions are held here every year. The coastline called the Cote d’Arget is the longest stretch of sandy beach in Europe and with ever changing sand banks makes this part of France an exciting place to surf. Swells can reach up to 6-7 ft without closing out and when conditions are right super hollow beach break waves are common.
Apart from the world class beach breaks Hossegor has a lot more to offer, it’s a very popular golfing destination and the Hossegor golf club has a well integrated 18 hole golf course for all levels to enjoy. Build between 1927 and 1930 the course was designed by Colt, Alison & Morrison Ltd a British golf architecture firm. The Golf club organises many completions throughout the year and is kept in excellent condition.
If you fancy seeing more of the surrounding Hossegor area why not rent a bike and spend a day cycling along the 40 km of local cycle tracks or feeling even more adventurous try to cover the 163 km of cycle tracks over the whole Les Landes area. The cycle tracks will take you from town along some of the beaches and into the forests of Hossegor. The forest was planted in the 19th century following Napoleons order to turn the deserted marshlands into a forest for cultivating pine trees. Check out the forest routes it’s a great way to keep cool and to find a shady spot on a really hot of a day.
Staying close to town and along the main beachfront there are a whole host of places to eat serving everything from snacks to fresh fish and gastronomic delights. There are terraces galore and a great selection of shops for all and not only surf related. Hossegor isn’t the cheapest of locations but you can find some excellent places to eat and maybe pick up a bargain in the sales. All of the main surf companies have bases in the area so it’s a great place to pick up some out of season stock if the timing is right.
